There is no doubt that traveling is expensive. Whether you wish to travel to the next state, the next country, or all the way around the world, travel requires money. There are many things that contribute to the costs of travel, not the least of which is airfare. Airfare often makes up a large percentage of a travel budget, even more so now with the oil prices continually on the rise. It is wise for any traveler to search for the cheapest airfare possible for any air travel that is planned.

Finding the cheapest airfare can be quite the task. While it may not be found instantly (although certain websites these days give nearly instant results), I guarentee that the search for the cheapest airfare prices will be worth it for you. One of the biggest reasons to fight for the cheapest airfare prices is that you can devote more of your money on the parts of your trip that you really care about like lodging, food, and entertainment.

A great place to start your search for the cheapest airfare is to talk with a travel agent. Especially if you are traveling with a business or organization, a travel agent can often be a very useful resource in locating the cheapest airfare. And don’t be afraid to shop around for a great travel agent who understands and meets your unique needs. Look for an agent that is willing to work hard for you.

If you are more of the adventurous type, don’t hesitate to search for the cheapest airfare available on your own. The internet is an amazing resource for all things travel, including finding surprizing deals on cheapest airfare. So devote some time to looking at several different websites before you make a purchase. You may find slightly more reasonable deals by staying away from mainstream websites. It is easy to do a search for websites that offer cheapest airfare deals.

Any trip will be more enjoyable if you can save money on your airfare. Finding the cheapest airfare frees you up to spend money on other things that matter more. You will be able to fill your special time with great memories that will last a lifetime. So do not hesitate to search out the cheapest airfare possible. You will be glad you did.

There are many finer things in life, things that only the rich and famous get to experience. For most of us, we miss out on the ‘best’ experiences in life due to lack of money or popularity. I used to think that a charter flight was a luxury that I, as a common person, would have to do without and simply be left wondering about. That isn’t the case. I recently began taking a charter flight to different functions and for trips, and I’ve learned that they are just as great as I had always imagined and that they are reasonable even for the common man.

I will be honest, I have always had opinions about people who were wealthy enough to have a charter flight to any vacation or event of their choice without thinking twice about it. Recently, however, a friend of mine booked a charter flight for six of our friends who were wanting to get away to the mountains for a long weekend. I thought she was crazy when she said that she had gotten a reasonable deal on a charter flight.

There are many types of charter flights I have learned, and they are not all as glamorous as I onced imagined. For example, I have friends who vacation in Mexico each year and they use a charter flight each time. For them, a charter flight simply means a non-stop flight on an airline that isn’t a mainstream big name that we often hear about. They do not have to mess with layovers at random airlines, but their charter flight goes directly from their hometown airport to the airport at their destination city.

Finding a charter flight doesn’t have to be difficult. In fact, it can be quite easy. Get ahold of a travel agent and see what they have to say about booking a charter flight, or get online and see what you can learn about the benefits of a charter flight. In my opinion, they are much easier than regular commercial flights and they are much more comfortable as well.

A charter flight is in fact one of life’s finer things. It is not, however, reserved only for the rich and famous. You and almost everyone you know could benefit by learning the truth about a charter flight and then booking one for your next trip or vacation. I assure you that you’ll be glad you did. And you may never go back to regular commercial flights.

There are a few fears in life that defy logic. Fear of spiders may be one, fear of lifts is another, and perhaps a fear of flying is another. Everyday, thousands of planes take off around the world, carrying millions of passengers safely to their destination. Flying is one of the safest, if not the safest, form of travel available. It is far safer than getting in the car, yet over one third of the population still report a fear of flying.

People cite many concerns when they talk of their fear of flying. Many report a lack of confidence in the air traffic control system and fear that a simple mistake on the ground can lead to disaster in the air. Then there are fears of faults with the plane itself. Most people saw the pictures of the concord crash a few years ago and when you’re sitting on an airplane, a few feet from the massive jet engines humming steadily, it seems very hard to believe that nothing could go wrong with such a machine. In fact the very shape and appearance of airplanes does little to inspire confidence in passengers who already are having doubts about the airworthiness of the plane.

Then there are the reports and press attention of the troubles of deep vein thrombosis.

The fact of the matter however, is that flying is extremely safe. It is one of the wonders of technology that air travel, with all the multitude of potential failures, keep delivering flight after flight, on time and without a hitch. In fact, in contrast to almost all other forms of travel, air travel is becoming safer and safer every year.

The statistics speak for themselves. Do you know what the chances are of having a single fatality on a flight? Well according to the BBC, it is 1 in 16 million. And in the vast majority of accidents where there are fatalities, more than half of the other passengers survive. What this means is that even if you defy all the odds and are on one of the few unlucky flights that does crash, you are still more likely to survive than die in the accident.

However, there is one issue with air travel that the statistics don’t commend so highly. Delays, lost luggage and missing flights are still frequent issues that plague passengers. Luckily, all of these can be covered for with some good, comprehensive travel insurance.

Anyone who has held their hand out of a car into the wind to play airplane already has a fundamental impression of control surfaces on the airplane.

When the heel of the palm went down, the airpressure under the hand pushed the hand up. That’s called lift. The airflow over/under the hand changes with the shape of the hand or airfoil. If you had little cut-outs near your wrist, there wouldn’t be as much lift.

The tail section contains control surfaces for keeping the plane stable and controllable.

1) Horizontal: The horizontal, non-moving part is called the stabilizer, and it prevents uncontrolled up-and-down motion of the nose. The small hinged sections on each side are called elevators, which work in unison. It is controlled by the cockpit control wheel/stick and increases or decreases lift. When forward pressure is applied on the wheel, the elevators move downward, which increases the length of the tail causing more lift, which forces the tail upward, causing the nose to drop. There is also a small hinged section in the elevator which is controlled by a small vertical wheel on the cockpit console which is used to finetune the elebator trim. Hense the name trim tab.

2) Vertical: The vertical non-moving part which prevents the nose from uncontrolled swinging side to side. The large hinged section is the rudder. The rudder is controlled by the foot pedals in the cockpit, and deflects the tail to the right or left.

The wings generate most of the lift to hold the plane in the air. Different models of aircraft will have wings of different shapes and in different vertical locations. On a Cessna, the wing is high, and on a Piper, it is low. On an F14, the can change from a forward angle to “swept back”.

On most small planes, the wings also carry the fuel.

There are many control surfaces on a wing:

1) The aileron is the hinged part of the back of the wing towards the tip which is used to roll the wings from side to side. There is one on each side of the plane and they work opposite of each other. When one moves up, the other moves down.

2) Flaps are the hinged sections on the back of the wing near the fuselage. Flaps are deployed downward on takeoff and landing to increase the lift produced by the wing and allows the plane to fly at slower speeds.

3) Spoilers and Slats are used on high performance/commercial aircraft and also changed the aerodynamics of the wing.

One common goal for people all over the world is trying to find ways to save money on flying. It is common knowledge that flying is a particularly expensive way of traveling, yet it is one of the most common, safest, and fastest method available in the world today. Unless you travel frequently for business purposes and your company pays all your airfares, it is you that will have to worry about the costs of flying. There are a wide range of things you could do to reduce the amount of money you will have to spend on air fare.

First, you should always be flexible in your plans, this will help you get the best available and lowest rate. Often some of the cheapest flights will limit the dates or days you are able to travel. For example, you may save money by agreeing to travel on a weekday or late night travel. Flexibility will allow you to save a great deal of money most times.

You should also plan as far ahead as you possible can. Many airlines only set aside a limited number of seats on the most desired flights at a lower fare. This means that these bargains will set out at a quicker rate than the others will. On the opposite side of the coin, if one of their flights does not sell as they expected it to; an airline will generally make more of those seats available at a discounted rate in order to sell more seats.

Generally, planning ahead is the cardinal rule of air travel, however sometimes you will find a sale of fare’s. Airlines typically run a sale and put great seats at a discount many time each year. It is hard to know exactly when the sales will happen, but they generally come at a time when travel is less likely. These times could be in the early fall or just after a major holiday.

One major factor in costs is the specific airport you intend to depart from. You should shop the different area airports and routes, while looking for the best deal. You could also consider making use of a travel agent. Travel agents are usually a great source of deals and discounts that you would likely not be able to get anywhere else. Another massive avenue is the internet. Make use of the vast expanse of the internet, to gain “internet only” deals. These deals would not be made available to anyone except internet users.

Jet Aviation has announced that they have been sold, pending antitrust clearance, to the Permira Funds a leading international private equity specialist. Ending several years of speculation, the Zurich based operator of business jet services has finally accomplished what had long been expected: the sale of the Hirschmann family business to outsiders.

As early as 2000 the sale of Jet Aviation had been expected by employees as well as by industry insiders. Indeed, Jet Aviation management had been marketed openly throughout 2001 by Goldman Sachs, but the sale was cancelled when a suitable buyer was not found and the terrorist attacks put a further drag on an already downturning economy. Still, rumors of the sale of the company persisted and heated up recently with speculation that one of Warren Buffet’s companies, i.e., Gulfstream Aerospace, may have been interested in the company’s maintenance facilities.

Currently, Jet Aviation is a Zurich-based concern employing 3500 people worldwide. US operations remain strong with the bulk of the employees working out of Teterboro [NJ] Airport.

Even with the probable sale of the company to Permira, speculation is persisting as to what will become of the company after the sale is completed. Some industry leaders believe that the company is more valuable for its parts than as a single entity. Thus, parts of the company could be sold off and a scaled down Jet Aviation might remain in place. Areas of the company thought to be susceptible to a sale include:

1. US Maintenance Facilities. With prime locations at Bedford, Teterboro, West Palm Beach, and Dallas the American facilities are capable of providing expert airframe support to just about any type of business aircraft.

2. Completion Centers. Some or all of the company’s award winning completion centers are thought to be highly marketable. From the Boeing BBJ to the Gulfstream 550, and to the Sikorsky S-70A aircraft delivered “green” to Jet Aviation facilities are outfitted with state of the art interiors.

3. FBOs. Jet Aviation’s group of fixed based operations which provide domestic and international flight handling, line maintenance services, refueling, passenger and crew transportation, catering and hotel accommodations and immigration and customs services are an important asset for the company. Indeed, the Dubai facility — Jet Aviation’s newest FBO — is considered by some to be unmatched in the industry.

4. Jet Professionals. Founded in 1983, Jet Professionals — an aviation personnel service provider — became part of Jet Aviation as part of the acquisition of K-C Aviation Transportation Services in 1996.

5. Aircraft Management. Over 160 aircraft worldwide are managed by Jet Aviation including more than 50 in the US alone. Many of these aircraft are also available for charter. US operations could be sold to Jet Aviation’s strategic partner, New World Jet Corporation, a FAR Part 135 charter certificate operator.

In all, the sale of Jet Aviation ends one big area of speculation while, at the same time, it has opened up other areas. In the world of business aviation speculation is business as usual.

Low cost airlines are now common place in our society and since there launch, traveling to foreign countries is now possible for the masses.

Easy Jet are considered to be the founders of low cost air travel, starting there operations from London Luton Airport. Over the years, Easy Jet has grown and now flies to many European countries. As Easy Jet grew, more and more airlines jumped on the bandwagon. Ryan Air, BMI Baby and FlyBe to name a few.

Not so long ago, I had cause to travel from the UK to France on a regular basis. As there were low cost airlines operating from my local airport, East Midlands, I decided to sample a flight and flew with BMI Baby. At that time, BMI Baby, the low cost arm of BMI (British Midland International), were flying to Paris CDG. It was a really convenient service and took about 1 hour. The flight I would regularly take, left the UK at 16:00 and would arrive in Paris at 18:00 local time. I can’t quite remember how many journeys I made with BMI Baby, but I would hazard a guess at about 12 – 15 times.

When BMI Baby launched there low cost operation from East Midlands, the fares were offered at ridiculous prices. Ridiculous to the point that they were offering seats for nothing! Unfortunately there is the issue of tax, so the flight was not actually free. Never the less, a return flight from the UK to France usually cost somewhere in the region of about £50 – £60, including tax. Seems incredible how they could actually make any money from their flights!

Although the costs were low, I felt that the service levels were quite high. My experience flying with BMI Baby was nearly always great. Although the flight is labeled as a no frills flight, the staff were very courteous and food and drink were always available for the short flights. The punctuality was excellent too!

BMI Baby stopped operating the flight from East Midlands to Paris and was replaced by there parent company BMI. In my experience, as soon as BMI Baby stopped flying and handed over the baton to BMI, which in effect is the same company, the prices escalated. It was very disappointing to lose the service as I had always enjoyed flying with them and found the prices easy on the pocket. I have since found alternative ways to travel from the UK to France, but if BMI Baby decide to come back, I will be tempted to come back too!

For people considering moving to another country as an expat, or simply looking at buying a holiday home abroad, there is no doubt that the low cost airlines have opened the door to another world. Another world which was not imaginable not so long ago. Low cost airlines, low service levels? Not in my experience.

Bon voyage!

If you’ve been shopping for cheap flights online, you no doubt have occasionally found yourself in the “Twilight Zone” of international travel costs. I speaking of course about the difference in valuations of the various currencies used throughout the world. Unlike a national purchase where everything is dollar based, the international market uses a basket of currency or the local currency of the country where traveling. This can lead to some very unpleasant surprises if not careful.

So how can someone see the world without going bankrupt while trying to get to see it all? The answer is careful shopping. Last minute deals are available for those with a less than strict time schedule. This method of travel has been known as “stand by” air travel for years. Using this method of cheap travel, you go to the airport, buy a ticket and sign in to wait if you can get on the plane. Full fare customers come first, then if any seats are left, they are offered to stand by folks at the heavily discounted rate.

Of course, not all of us have the time or inclination to for leisure flight times. The next best alternative to full fare, expensive international air travel tickets is the consolidator. Here, a wholesaler, or consolidator purchases a block of tickets for a specified flight, day or time. These blocks of seats have been discounted to the wholesaler because the purchase was made as part of an ongoing agreement or simply due to the “buy in bulk” discount.

Care must be taken as travel agencies will sometimes use the services of consolation companies to gain low cost tickets to sell. The travel agency will then typically add service charges to cover their overhead and profit. This can sometimes be significant but may be the only way to get at least a somewhat discounted rate for some of the more popular travel destinations

A quick search on the web can deliver all types of potentially cost saving offers for cheap international tickets. Care must be taken because although many will claim the lowest prices, the fact is that additional charges, fees and costs may not all be included in each offer. Be sure to measure apples to apples when pricing tickets from a variety of consolidators. Some have been known to lower the price of the fare then charge extra high service fees to make it for the seemingly lower fare. Make certain when to find out the final, total cost for your international airfare ticket before making the commitment!

There is always a chance that your flight will get cancelled or delayed regardless of when you fly. However, the holidays are a very busy time for airports and you don’t want to spend Christmas there instead of with your family. Be prepared for long lines at the check in desk and security. Even though you should be at the airport two hours before your plane takes off during normal travel times, you will want to increase that up to three hours when you travel around the holidays.

Try to keep the amount of items you bring along to a minimum. It will make checking in your baggage easier and prevent such items from being lost or damaged. If you are traveling for Christmas and you want to send gifts it is a good idea to mail them separately and they will be there when you arrive. If you do decide to pack them don’t wrap them as they are subject to being inspected. You can wrap the gifts when you arrive at your destination.

Traveling around Thanksgiving or Christmas always comes with the risk of the weather being a problem so make sure you are prepared. Some travelers have had their flights delayed for a couple of days due to storms coming in during these times. It is a good idea to arrive at the airport prepared for the worst. Make sure you have plenty of activities with you for children to stay busy with. You also want to carry snacks and drinks so you don’t have to pay the outrageous prices at the airport for these items.

If you have specific dates of travel in order to be spend the holidays away from home you will want to secure your travel arrangements early. Look for the best possible deals online and with a travel agent. If you want until the last minute though in hopes of prices dropping you may be disappointed that you won’t get to go because the flights are sold out.

Many people save money on flights by taking connections or accepting a layover or two. You may want to skip this money saving tip during the holidays just because most airports will be very busy. You don’t want to have to deal with hurrying across a busy airport terminal to find your connecting flight. If you can get a decent price on a direct flight then make sure you do so.

It is very important that you have all your travel documents and a printed copy of your travel itinerary. Most airline staff will be overwhelmed with people asking for assistance during this time of the year. You don’t want to arrive and discover that you don’t have a reservation after all and that there is not a space on the plane for you.

If you want to avoid the crowds during holiday travel, consider taking a very early morning flight or a late evening flight. You will find these are often less expensive as well. While it may interrupt your normal sleep patterns, it can help to reduce the amount of stress and anxiety while you are traveling during the holidays.

For those planning to fly with children around the holidays, make sure you keep a careful eye on them. They can quickly become separated from your family in the crowd of people moving around. Strollers are a good option for small children. Make sure all the adults in the party know which flight they are taking and the airline in case they get separated as well.

You can have a fabulous trip to visit your family and friends over the holidays if you are prepared. Paying attention to the guidelines of the airlines is very important to ensure you have a save trip. Being on time will help to ensure that you don’t have your plans crushed because you have to catch a plane in the following days.
