Home to unusual animals, plants and culture, Asia is split into five regions: Central Asia, East Asia, West Asia, Southeast Asia, and Southwest Asia. Among all of Asia’s divisions, Southeast Asia has got to be the most strange to western culture.

Composed of countries that are geographically south of China, east of India and north of Australia, this region offers tourists a new world made up of colorful parades and traditions, out-of-this-world flavors, spectacular landscapes and people as courteous and as warm as you’d get anywhere in the world. In this article, I will summarize my top 5 secret travel hotspots in this wonderful region of Southeast Asia. An alternative to the typical travel sites in each country, these destinations produce a different form of enchanting experience.

TOP 5: VIETNAM (Bach Ma National Park) – Located in the central part of Vietnam (near Hue City, and about 680 km of the capital, Hanoi), the park is a natural habitat to 55 kinds of mammals and 233 types of birds. This 22,031 hectares of biodiversity haven in Vietnam was created in 1991 to safeguard the vibrant forest extending from South China Sea to the country’s border. This is an amazing place to capture the breathtaking beauty of nature, with just the perfect shade of light from tall forest trees. Recently restored by the national park’s management body, the French colonial-era hillside holiday resort inside the park also draws holidaymakers who want a splash and dip while experiencing the exotic weather of the country amid the abundant foliage.

4. Sukothai, Thailand- Over the last couple of decades, Thailand has been one of the most favored travel and leisure spots for westerners. Its enigmatic history and culture, mixed with its distinct culture and dramatic landscape, provide visitors a surreal experience you’ll rarely find anywhere else. Sukothai is based north-central of the country, between Bangkok and Chiang Mai, and houses an ancient city that offers a view of Thailand’s glorious past. Putting in showcase some of the country’s best art and architectural buildings and designs from its golden age, Sukothai and its numerous ruins became a Unesco World Heritage Site after its restoration in 1991.

TOP 3: CAMBODIA (Siem Reap Province) – Known as the provincial capital, Siem Reap is found at the northwest of Cambodia. The name, which means “Siam defeated,” reminds Cambodians of the historical struggle between the Khmer and Siamese. Offering travelers a glimpse of their ancient temples, the town is only 7 km from Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport and accessible by boat and bus from the country’s capital, Phnom Peh. Vacationers must never miss the famous travelers’ attractions: Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom that showcase the beautiful history of Cambodia and are now recognized as one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites in the World.

TOP 2: INDONESIA (Kalimantan) – Kalimantan is made up of a portion of Borneo Island and 73 percent of Indonesia’s area. Known as Indoneasian Borneo, Kalimantan is well known for this vibrant biodiversity and phenomenal views incomparable to other Asian countries. Trekking enthusiasts would love to go to Kayan Mentarang National Park and reach the top of Apokayan Highlands. In this part, trekkers and hikers can come across friendly orangutans, proboscis monkeys, unique-looking birds, and even the odd sun bear.

The urban village of Sungai Mahakam gives travelers a glimpse of a river village and a day at the floating markets.

1. Cuyo, Palawan, Philippines- This tropical archipelago in the region of Palawan offers one of the most breath-taking sceneries in the known world. The archipelago of Cuyo is situated north of the Sulu Sea, far out in the open sea of Palawan. Composed of 40 islands and islets (most of which are uninhabited), the area is home to one of the most numerous collections of marine life, which are protected by the country’s laws. With a Spanish Fort constructed in 1677 to secure inhabitants from Moro Pirates, the south of Cuyo Islands is where the village of Cuyo is situated.

The fort houses an old Spanish-style church, a convent and a chapel in its substantial walls, along with old houses from the same era. But more than just the usual tropical paradise, Cuyo offers visitors a unique experience with its vibrant local take on Spanish culture- a practice striving to stay alive amidst technological advancement.

Unique practices like making cashew nut brittle and harvesting salt, and the use of Cuyonan dialect, are just some of the things that show how the small area has a lot more to feature than just its unblemished beaches. Corteous townsfolk and the quintessentially simple old-Filipino way of life are its jewels, waiting to be uncovered by travelers who are seeking for more than just the usual.
